The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is the worlds most widely accepted approach to IT Service Management. ITIL provides a consistent set of best practices, drawn from the private and public sectors internationally. It is supported by a comprehensive qualifications scheme, accredited training organizations, and implementation and assessment tools. The best practice processes promoted in ITIL support and are supported by, the ISO/IEC 20000 Standard for IT service Management.
ITIL can enable organizations to achieve three objectives:
1. Establish proven best practice IT service management processes to manage IT from a business perspective and achieve business goals, including that of compliance
2. Put in place clear process goals, based on the organization's business goals, and provide a means of measuring progress against them
3. Ensure effective IT governance and control at the process level, and enable IT to demonstrate that it meets or exceeds the requirements set forth by government or external regulations
